American hops
Americans have prided themselves on growing hops since colonial times. The first commercial cultivation was established in 1648 on a 45-acre garden in Massachusetts to supply breweries in the area. Massechutsetts was one of the most important states in hop supply for the next 150 years before cultivation spread to other New England states.
Now hops are grown primarily in Washington State, Oregon and Idaho, totaling approximately 24,000 acres.
